Splash Back In! Earlier this year, we relaunched the Berwickshire Marine Reserve’s annual photography competition – Splash Back In! This year was a bit different, and what better way to lift the spirits of those missing diving under the waves, exploring the rockpools or enjoying the fresh air along the Coast Path, than digging through the archives to enter photos and short videos into our competition. We asked people to submit entries that were taken while diving, snorkelling, rockpooling or walking the clifftops edging the Marine Reserve, and we were blown away by the quality of the photos and videos we received! © Genine Keogh The three judges for the competition were: Lawson Wood – professional underwater photographer and co-founder of the BMR (https://www.oceaneyefilms.co.uk/) Tim Askew – filmmaker and camera operator (https://www.timaskew.co.uk/) Jim Greenfield – underwater photographer (https://www.oceaneyephoto.com/) They had a very hard job to decide the winner of our three categories, as well as an overall winner of the competition, but ultimately came to a unanimous decision: Marine Life Portraits Jeremy Brown with ‘Jellyfish with Passengers’ “A couple of amphipods hitching a ride in/on a semi-transparent jellyfish (Tima bairdi) against a black bachground while SCUBA diving at St Abbs Head and Eyemouth, Scottish east coast.” The judges loved this image so much that Jeremy was also awarded the overall winner of the competition, and received a stunning underwater print by award-winning photographer and co-founder of Blue Marine Foundation George Duffield. Jellyfish with Passengers by Jeremy Brown Petticowick at Sunset by John Peters Scenic Image of the Reserve John Peters with ‘Petticowick at Sunset’ “Petticowick, part of St Abb’s Head National Nature Reserve, in the late evening photographed into the setting sun with the distinctive rock – an important part of the scene. This image was taken in late evening, low down on the beach with a tripod to emphasise the rocks.” Short Film Gery Beeckmans “This video showcases the best of the marine life found within the Reserve, and is a compilation of the dives from my most recent trip to Eyemouth.” Congratulations to all of the winners of the competition and thank you to everyone who entered!
